helping neighbors
has long been the Southern way, and local U-Haul stores across Florida, Georgia, and Alabama are taking the sentiment to heart.
Hurricane Helene is projected to be
a major storm
making landfall on Thursday, September 26 along the Gulf Coast. With it, Helene will likely bring flooding rain (especially along the panhandle and western coastline), destructive winds, power outages, and life-threatening storm surges.
In preparation, Florida Governor DeSantis has already declared a ‘state of emergency’ in 61 Floridian counties, as has Governor Kemp across Georgia. (This declaration allows for the necessary resources to respond and recover before, during, and after a storm.)
Many residents across the Southeast have been
encouraged to prepare
for potential evacuation, and U-Haul is making plans easier. The nationwide rental company has announced that people in the path of the soon-to-be hurricane can access thirty days of free self-storage and a U-Box portable container to ensure the safety of their belongings through U-Haul’s disaster relief program.
According to a press release, these free storage resources will allow “those making hurricane preparations access to the disaster relief program in addition to people who will need help after the storm.” The offer is based on availability at individual company-owned and operated locations and applies to new self-storage and U-Box rentals. The full list of participating locations
can be found here
.
U-Haul is also an official American Red Cross Disaster Responder—proudly “at the forefront of aiding communities in times of need.” If you or someone you know could take advantage of these resources in advance of the hurricane, you can contact the participating offices
directly
to sign up for free storage.
