‘Texas Treasure’ Shipley Do-Nuts Is Celebrating Its 88th Birthday With A Sweet Giveaway—And Recognition From The Texas Historical Commission

for just five cents? Such was the case back in Houston, Texas in 1936, when Lawrence Shipley, Sr. opened the very first ‘Shipley Cream Glazed Do-Nuts’ bakery at 1417 Crockett Street.

With his own special recipe, Shipley hand-cut his doughnuts into the now-iconic hexagonal Shipley shape. He fried them up fresh daily—and little did he know just how far his doughnuts would reach. Today, over eight decades later, that signature hot

spanning generations of customers. This milestone is also marked by a very special recognition: the official title of

Texas Treasure

by the Texas Historical Commission “for its exceptional historical contributions to the state’s economic growth and prosperity,” Shipley announced in a press release.

“Our 88th birthday marks one dozen—our favorite number here at Shipley—years from our 100th. We wanted to take a moment to celebrate the sweet success we’ve experienced for nearly a century as we keep growing and bringing our famous donuts and kolaches to more people across the country,” said Shipley Do-Nuts CEO Flynn Dekker.

“Not many brands have had the opportunity, like we have, to serve generations of guests and become a part of family traditions. We’re looking forward to even more growth and innovation over our next 88 years.”

As a birthday gift to fans, the beloved doughnut chain is commemorating the special occasion with a
